dell laptop

Dell, the mammoth computer manufacturer, has commenced the largest recall in the history of the personal computer. A number of Dell laptops have caught on fire, apparently due to faulty batteries. Dell is recalling 4.1 million of the laptop batteries that it included within its computers. The batteries were made by Sony. These batteries are deemed a fire risk. Free replacements are being offered. The batteries were sold independently or came with Dell laptop computers between April of 2004 and July of 2006. They are described as lithium-ion batteries and can be found and were utilized in XPS, Inspiron, Latitude, and Precision Mobile Workstation models units. The issue hit the news when a laptop burst into a flaming mess at a conference in Japan. Other laptop owners came forward to claim that they had endured similar experiences. A spokesperson for Dell indicated that in isolated instances a short circuit might cause the batteries to overheat, ending in smoke and fire. Dell is asking customers to visit the Dell Internet website to see if they own an affected battery.

The Samsung X460 Is Here

Samsung has recently come out with the X460, a 14.1", 4.2lb notebook that is thin and extremely portable. It comes loaded with a 2.26GHz Inter Core 2 Duo P8400, 3GB RAM, a 320GB HDD, 256MB nVidia GeForce 9200M GPU, an LED backlit display at 1280x800, and of course a few USB ports (3), HDMI, a card reader, a fingerprint reader, and an integrated webcam. Apparently the boot time is remarkably fast and it's easy to upgrade, too. One of the "little things" (or maybe it's not so little) that we always notice in a laptop is the quality of the keyboard, and the X460 gets points for this as well. You may have noticed that the resolution isn't extremely high for a 14.1" and the GPU isn't exactly mindblowing at only 256MB. But you won't shed a tear over that stuff when we tell you the price of this extremely portable and decently powerful laptop is a mere $1700. Via laptopmag ´

MIT's $100 Laptop Photos

Pictures of the working One Laptop Per Child prototype have turned up following the first showing today. We're not so sure about the orange and yellow color scheme, but everything else looks good.If we were a child in a developing country, we'd much prefer to blog using a $100 laptop that we own, sponsored by the government, rather than pay 75 cents an hour to rent one from Microsoft. Also, is it us or does that keyboard look quite similar to the one on the MacBook?

Good news for rich geeks: British company called Luvaglio has designed the first luxury laptop that will cost over a million dollars. Furthermore there's built in screen cleaning device and diamond encrusted power button. This button is also a security feature - laptop won't start unless a special identification gem is placed in the slot in power button. The company CEO which named the company after his own last name, says that they did not want just add jewelry and diamonds to the notebook, they wanted to give those diamonds functions. "We gave this laptop attention to every detail to make it a real piece of work. We are redefining luxury in technology, laptops is just one of our sectors. The true element of luxury is something which matches your own style, and performs functions rather that just looks good." adds Rohan Luvaglio. The company claims to have access to diamonds that are so rare, that they can not be obtained anywhere else, thus every one of their laptops will be truly unique. Furthermore the company will offer customization done to the customer specifications in every notebook they build and sell. But luxury does not come cheap - the price tag for every such laptop is over one million dollars.

Acer Ferrari 1000

Acer sponsorship of the Scuderia Ferrari racing team brings the compact Acer Ferrari 1000 Laptop. Featuring Carbon Fiber lid, fierce candy red trim, and the speed-invoking Ferrari logo. The similarities do not stop at the exterior, as the Ferrari 1000 is filled with power, thanks to its AMD Turion Dual Core chip and 768 MB RAM. Light weight, it weighs four pounds (3.85 lb.) and with a thickness of only 1.36 inches means its designed for portability.DesignClassified as an ultra-portable, taking this laptop out and about is a pleasure thanks to its small size and light weight. To help reduce size and weight on the Ferrari 1000, an integrated optical was excluded, instead comes with an external optical drive. Opening the laptop was designed to make you feel as if youve entered the cockpit of a supercar. Starting with the Carbon Fiber lid, it is flanked by red trim and has a distinct logo adorning the center.Features and PerformancePowered by AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-56 dual core processor, this CPU sports a 2x512KB L2 cache, runs on an 1800 MHz HyperTransport Bus, and is built on a 90nm manufacturing process. Maximum power dissipation (Thermal Design Power, TDP) of the TL models is at 35W. ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 chipset equips an integrated graphics. Not to mention, 768MB DDR2 667MHz RAM and supports up to 4GB RAM and a Seagate Momentus 5400.3 (ST9160821AS) 160GB 5400RPM 8MB cache SATA drive.Lets get to more goods: the vibrant 12.1-inch WXGA (1280 x 800 native resolution) widescreen display with Acer CrystalBrite high-brightness LCD and with LED backlight. It enhances the viewing experience, as color and contrast are much more rich and vibrant. Viewing angles were respectable and color inversing was minimal.Attached within the LCD panel-mounted is a 1.3 megapixel camera located above the display. You also get Acer VisageON software, which tracks 22 points of the users face so it to remains centered in the frame. The Ferrari 1000 came with two batteries: one 6-cell rated at 4800 mAh and one 3-cell rated at 2000 mAh. The larger 6-cell capacity battery protrudes from the rear of the machine but the 3-cell does not. Overall battery life with the 6-cell isnt that great.Recommendation:The Acer Ferrari 1000 is stylish, feature rich and and is plenty fast but there is a caveat. For a 12-inch ultraportable, it is heavy. Battery life stinks, and the optical drive is external (which could be a pro or con). Gamers need to look elsewhere for their gaming delight and try the M1330 instead. Instead, users who opt for this machine will appreciate the slick Ferrari styling and great performance. While its bigger brother, the Acer Ferrari 5005 outperforms the 1000 in almost every respect, the Ferrari 1000 is tailored for a different audience. If you must have the Ferrari styling and prefer a lightweight stylish machine, then the Ferrari 1000 could be a good choice for you.Acer Ferrari 1000 Technical SpecificationsProcessor AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-56 1.8 GHzMemory 768 MB DDR2Harddrive 160GBOS Windows XP ProWeight 4 poundsScreen 12.1Screen resolution 1280 x 800Graphic Card ATI Radeon Xpress 1150Battery Life 3.5 hours

HP Pavilion tx2000 Tablet

A difference between the HP tx2000 and most other tablets is that it's an entertainment-focused laptop aimed primarily at home users. It has speakers built into the display hinges and comes with HP's Quickplay software, which is similar to Windows Media Center and as a result a bit superfluous since you can't use it without starting up Windows. If you just look at the design, you'd be hard pressed to find any differences from last year's model, but why change a winning formula? It's a good-looking tablet laptop by any standards. If you take a closer look, you may notice that HP has used another imprint finish - apparently called "Echo," instead of the "Wave" finish used on the tx1000. Black and silver details have also been switched around on the tx2000, but in general the impression is the same, which is a good thing. Also returning are the keyboard and touchpad; the keyboard is very comfortable to use, and so is the excellent HP-unique touchpad with a separate scrollbar. The 12.1-inch widescreen with a 1280x800 resolution is bright and offers good clarity, but the viewing angle is somewhat limited. Seeing as it's a tablet laptop, you can rotate the display, and it even has an emblazoned arrow indicating which way to turn it, so you can't get it wrong.TabletThat brings us to the most prominent feature of the tx2000, which is of course the tablet mode. The active digitizer provides more accurate ink lines than the resistive digitizer of the tx1000. However, in spite of its accuracy, the display occasionally has a hard time interpreting what you write - especially when you write at a normal pace. If you slow it down it will do better, but it's still an obvious usability problem. One helpful tool in getting to know the display and what it can do is the tablet training mode. You can also calibrate both the stylus and the screen via the tablet and pen properties. Once you get used to it, you will eventually be able to use it more efficiently. If you happen to be of the male persuasion and plan to have children some day, you should also be aware of how the fans are placed: When you use the computer in tablet mode on your lap, the fans will blow hot air right on your scrotum until it's eventually reduced to a small heap of smoldering ruins of what once was your manhood.Performance and Battery LifeThe HP tx2000 is equipped with a 2.3 GHz AMD Turion X2 (dual core) processor, which is not quite as fast as its Intel Core 2 counterpart, but still more than sufficient for just about anything you would consider running on a small tablet PC. Our test unit also came with an impressive 4GB of RAM and a 64-bit edition of Windows Vista that can actually use the full 4GB. As for graphics, it's equipped with an NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150. The name NVIDIA might be synonymous with high-end graphics cards, but this is actually a low-end integrated graphics solution, so it's safe to say you won't be playing any recent games on the tx2000. Then again, hardly any 12-inch laptops employ discrete graphics, as it comes at the expense of long battery life, which is usually an essential prerequisite for an ultraportable. The battery lasted for almost four hours during casual use, which is great considering that we only used the small 4-cell battery. A 6-cell battery is also available that should improve battery life even further, although this will slightly increase the weight and raise the unit's height. This could be a detail worth noting, as the device is already a bit heavy for a 12" ultraportable, weighing in at 4.26 pounds (1.92 kg). Wireless performance is impeccable, thanks to the inclusion of draft-n support in the Broadcom wireless adapter. HP has also included a Bluetooth module in the package.HP Pavilion tx2000 Tablet Technical SpecificationsProcessor 2.3 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-66Harddrive 250GB SATA 5400rpmOS Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bitWeight 4.26 pounds (1.92 kg)Screen 12 inchesScreen resolution 1280x800

IdeaPad U110

Its sleek, it's small, and available in Red or Black colors to match your designer taste. What is this? Would you believe it's an ultraportable from Lenovo? The IdeaPad U110 is Lenovo's attempt to grab consumer's attention with an ultraportable designed to turn heads. It's everything a business professional would want in an ultra light machine, without the suit and tie conservative look found in its bigger ThinkPad brothers.Measuring in 10.8 inches by 7.7 inches and weighing 3 pounds with its included 7-cell battery and only 2.5 pounds with its included 4-cell battery, the IdeaPad U110 is designed to be used on the go. Lenovo even threw in its own sleeve case. The sexy 11.1-inch LED backlit widescreen display offers a native 1368x768 resolution. Although very crisp and colorful, the glossy display could be improved as at times it appeared to be too reflective. LCD panel is enclosed in an aluminum/metal that offers a striking design that will certainly turn heads. The entire body is made around matte black magnesium that offers durability a light and thin machine needs.Upon opening the U110 you will find the full-size keyboard coated with a glossy piano finish. Looks cool but attracts fingerprints and dust more easily. Stay away from those potato chips! Typing on the keyboard is actually efficient with large sized keys. The only thing I would hope to see an illuminating keyboard or a Think Light for dark conditions.Despite the IdeaPad U110's tiny size, it packs sufficient connectivity options including three USB 2.0 ports, express card, memory card reader, FireWire, Ethernet port although it's not equipped with an internal optical drive but the machine is supplied with an external optical drive that is powered by 2 USB 2.0 ports.Features and PeformanceTwo unique features on this machine makes it stand out from the rest of the ultraportable pack. First is VeriFace log in application that allows you to quickly and securely login to your private machine by capturing your face (used in conjunction with its built-in 1.3 webcam). Although neat idea, it causes the machine to boot slowly and sluggish. The 2nd great feature is the novo key - which, when pressed as power when the unit is off - will start the automatic recovery to make the unit factory fresh. The IdeaPad also features Bluetooth and A/B/G connectivity for wireless networks. It does not have 3G nor GPS built in but hopefully in future iterations they will come optional or equipped. In terms of performance, our test model comes with a 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo L7500 that runs sufficient under the performance hog: Windows Vista Home Premium. 2GB DDR2 isn't enough and the 4200RPM hard drive is hardly sufficient to handle today's tasks. The 4 cell battery lasted around 2 hours under general usage but lasted only an hour when watching a DVD movie. Bummer. Luckily, the 7-cell battery lasted 2.5 hours watching a DVD and nearing 3 and half hours on normal usage. This doesn't come close to the VAIO TZ which lasted 8 hours but is may be acceptable for some. For around $2,000, the IdeaPad U110 does not disappoint as it comes with sufficient power to handle most business related tasks while enabling you to take it anywhere, anytime. Plus it looks good, too. But users demanding a little more power and longer battery life may need to look elsewhere like the VAIO TZ line.IdeaPad U110 Technical SpecificationsProcessor Intel Core 2 Duo L7500 1.6 GHzMemory 2GB DDR2 RAMHarddrive 120GBOS Microsoft Windows VistaWeight 3 poundsScreen 1366 by 768Screen resolution 1366x768Graphic Card Intel GMA X3100Battery Life 3 hours

Eee PC 1000

The largest and most recent entry in Asus' well known Eee line is the 10.2" (1024x600) Eee PC 1000. This netbook comes with a standard 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 but trumps the competition by offering up to 2GB of RAM. Also nice is the option for an SSD up to 40GB (or you can get an 80GB HDD). Other perks include a good keyboard, 802.11n WiFi, and a respectable four hours of battery life. On the downside, you're getting a machine that weighs 2.9lbs and lacks 3G compatibility. But the price is right, starting at $400, making this a netbook to think about.

Eee PC S101

This is truly a gorgeous netbook. Thin and beautiful, this 10.2" netbook is lightweight (2.2lbs) enough to bring anywhere and stylish enough to be proud of in any environment. It's also available with up to a 64GB SSD along with 20GB of free online "Eee storage" with purchase. The battery life is also strong, managing 5 hours without having to go to a heavy 6-cell battery. The rest of the specs are more normal, with an Atom N270 and 1GB RAM, but while the connectivity is strong (Bluetooth, 802.11n) it could be stronger (no WWAN). Still, this is an attractive and capable laptop, and the only reason it's not #1 on our list is that it costs as much as two average netbooks. It's still not bad bang for your buck, but expect to shell out as much as $699 if you want to call one your own.

More HP Mini-Notes On The Way

Rumors are circulating that HP is planning on releasing three new Mini-Notes, including new 11.6 and 13.3 inch models. The 13.3" Mini-Note is tagged as "low-cost", and both it and the 11.6" version are slated to be released in June. Well before these come out, the 10.1" version with a 16:9 aspect ratio is due to be released in the beginning of February for around $567.The larger sized laptops will still be considered Mini-Notes, possibly because they are still going to use the Atom Zxx series processors. As of now this is a rumor, with digitimes claiming to have gotten this information from "sources at notebook makers". We'll see how this pans out in the coming months.

LG Dare (Verizon Wireless)

THE GOOD The LG Dare has an intuitive touch-screen interface, an advanced 3.2-megapixel camera, a full HTML browser, EV-DO Rev. A, and plenty of other powerful features. It also has excellent call quality.
THE BAD The LG Dare's touch interface has a slight learning curve, and we weren't too pleased with the handwriting interface. Also, the Web browsing experience was quite disappointing.
THE BOTTOM LINE The LG Dare is an innovative and feature-rich handset with several surprises that sets it apart from other touch-screen phones.Go to the Full CNET Product Review »

Samsung Omnia (Verizon Wireless)

THE GOOD The Samsung Omnia features a spacious touch screen with customizable Home screen, haptic feedback, and accelerometer. The Windows Mobile smartphone also offers Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, and EV-DO Rev. A support, as well as a 5-megapixel camera and robust multimedia features.
THE BAD You're still limited to the preloaded widgets. The onscreen keyboard is a bit cramped, and the Omnia can be sluggish.
THE BOTTOM LINE Though slightly more expensive, Verizon customers looking for a touch-screen smartphone will get a better user experience and faster performance from the Samsung Omnia than the RIM BlackBerry Storm.Go to the Full CNET Product Review »

Sony Introduces a Premium-Priced Netbook

The netbook PC category has not been around that long, but already Sony is slipping a new model between the traditional laptop computers and the trimmer netbooks.
RelatedAll Computer Coverage
The new Sony Vaio P series Lifestyle PC is lighter than most laptops at 1.4 pounds and is MacBook Air-thin at less than an inch. It is not quite 10 inches wide with a bright eight-inch LCD screen. Like a laptop, the P uses a 1.3-HHz Intel processor.
The extra inches give it a more comfortable keyboard than the typical paperback-size netbook. Sony says it will go four hours on a battery charge. It can be configured with either a hard drive or solid-state storage. With 3G mobile broadband, like a smartphone, and Wi-Fi, like a PC, it begins to blur the distinctions between devices.
But Sony also creates another kind of category with this device: the premium-priced netbook. Like other Sony Vaios, the design is sleek and it comes in many colors.
Sony is asking $900 for the most basic model, twice the price tag of many other netbooks. It goes on sale later this month. STEPHEN WILLIAMS

For $150, Third-World Laptop Stirs Big Debate

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — When computer industry executives heard about a plan to build a $100 laptop for the developing world’s children, they generally ridiculed the idea. How could you build such a computer, they asked, when screens alone cost about $100?

A Rugged Cellphone That Scoffs at the Elements

Sonim bills the XP3 Enduro as the “world’s only rugged fully submersible G.S.M. phone.” The unlocked XP3 comes covered in a hardened rubber case and can be dunked up to three feet. The phone can function in temperatures from 4 degrees below zero Fahrenheit to 140 degrees above — and it has a 128-by-160-pixel shock-resistant screen, so odds are that it will not crack as easily as the more delicate Apple iPhone. The XP3 also supports multiple languages and has an omnidirectional microphone.
